Your Role in the Mental Health Crisis
Issues of compassion fatigue, burnout, mental distress, and suicide in the veterinary profession have received much attention over the last several years. A recent study, found that only a small percentage of individuals in the veterinary field who indicated severe psychological distress had accessed resources that are available to help. One of the biggest barriers in seeking out treatment for mental health, identified in the study, was fear of being stigmatized. In this talk we will identify and discuss some of the ways we can reduce the stigma of mental illness. We will also identify and discuss ways to help those who are experiencing mental health issues and/or psychological distress, from interventions that can be done at an individual level to those that are more organizational or systemic.
